the holistic voice
Kelly Carey is a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (Kelly Miller, M.S. CCC-SLP), voice technique instructor, and singer-actress from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her professional career includes credits in musical theater, concert vocalist, and headlining her own show for Norwegian and Celebrity cruise lines, and more! Favorite roles include: Into the Woods (Witch) and Next To Normal (Diana), Tick, Tick…BOOM! (Susan/Karessa) and Legally Blonde the Musical (Paulette). Kelly has been a singing technique instructor for 18 years in her private studio, and serves as adjunct voice faculty at Western Michigan University in the Musical Theater Dept. since 2022. Currently, she is a Speech-Language Pathologist & Voice Therapist at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI. (www.maryfreebed.com - request Kelly MILLER)
As a singing voice instructor, Kelly is a master technician! Her approach to voice is holistic: educating the student in vocal health and technique, while honoring each individual’s unique quality. Studying the voice from an anatomical perspective, Kelly is known for making the abstract ideas of vocal production and musicality more tangible for the student as well as diagnosing poor voice habits that can impede functionality, production, and sound quality. Her unique training as a speech-language pathologist allows her to approach voice pedagogy from the physiological aspect. In addition to polishing the voice, Kelly focuses attention on the individual needs of each student, whether it is performance aspects, vocal endurance, or simply getting the courage to sing in front of others. She provides training for all types of professional voice users (teachers, lawyers, public speakers, etc…) in the areas of voice health, production, longevity, and strength.

TESTIMONIALS
“Kelly Carey is essential for any singer wanting to pursue theater. Not only does she teach technique and vocal endurance for the demands of the industry, but she knows how to bring out flawless acting interpretation of a song. She’s GR’s most knowledgeable instructor and I can’t imagine I could have done it without her!”
“Kelly was a key component in my college audition preparation. Her understanding of the voice and her respect for my individual and unique qualities provided me with a great sense of myself and what I bring to the the table as a performer. In her studio, I grew exponentially and felt that I had the knowledge and skill I needed to create the foundation of my career.”
“Kelly is a phenomenal teacher and mentor. Her lessons are professional and efficient, her approach is honest and inspiring. With Kelly’s guidance and training, my daughter was invited to 18 collegiate BFA program auditions and got accepted into 6 programs - including department scholarships in musical theater! Parents don’t realize how competitive these programs are and what this process entails. I don’t know WHAT we would have done without Kelly! She’s a rock star!”
“I’ve never met a performer quite like Kelly Carey. She is giving of her spirit, creative through and through, and is selflessness personified. She is what all teachers should strive to be.”
“Kelly Carey provides invaluable instruction for all vocalists. Without her help, I don’t think I would have been able to sustain each night on the Rock of Ages tour. Kelly is a huge part of the reason I was able to make a career out of performing!”
